New Balance awarded US$1.5 million in China trademark case

2017-08-25

Following a promise from President Xi Jinping last month to punish intellectual property infringement, and the launch of a US investigation into Chinese IP theft, a Chinese court has found in favor of US shoemaker New Balance in a trademark infringement case.

The court ordered three Chinese shoemakers to pay US$1.5 million to the US company for violating the copyright of the signature New Balance logo, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

According to lawyers cited in the report, despite the small compensation amount by international standards, it is one of the highest to be awarded to a foreign company in a trademark dispute in China.
